Satish Kumar has written a very good article about how we have “lost our link” to the soil with all of the specialization and commercialization in society. If you are looking for some motivation to get into the why and how of healthy food from your locale’
In Satish’s words…
“During the French Revolution the words were “liberté, égalité, fraternité”, in the American Declaration of Independence they were “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.
“The implication of both phrases is very similar. It is human life, human liberty, human equality and human happiness. Even the words adopted by the New Age movement – “mind, body, spirit” – refer to the human mind, human body and human spirit. It’s an anthropocentric worldview – the view that human beings are at the centre of the universe.”
A change in consciousness from thinking of value of food as dollars-per-ounce to thinking of the value of food as nutrition-per-calorie is all one needs at the checkout stand. When we start doing that, we will be supporting local, organic, humane, etc. products and if we support those we nourish our children and start building a future for all of us.
